Our Story
The East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association (EC4WDA) was born out of a shared passion for adventure and the growing popularity of four-wheel-drive vehicles in the 1960s. The story begins in 1965, when the Triangle Jeepers of Pittsburgh hosted the first East Coast Four-Wheel-O-Rama in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. This landmark event attracted four-wheelers from across the region, blending competitive racing with trail-riding camaraderie. What started as casual weekend gatherings soon evolved into larger annual events, forming the foundation of what would become a thriving off-road community.
As friendships grew among clubs, families, and individuals, it became clear that the burgeoning sport needed structure. In February 1969, the Triangle Jeepers invited representatives from the Tri-County (Lisbon, Ohio) and Allegheny (Oil City, Pennsylvania) four-wheel-drive clubs to an inter-club meeting. Sixteen attendees formulated and approved the first competition rules, laying the groundwork for safer, more organized events. They also recognized the need for a larger governing body, setting a date for the first meeting of what would become the East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association later that year in State College, Pennsylvania.
At its inception, EC4WDA regionalized its growing membership into five distinct regions:

This structure helped streamline communication and event organization, ensuring members could engage locally without the need to travel vast distances across the East Coast. Each region held its own spring and fall meetings to address local concerns, which were then brought to the executive board in the spring and discussed association-wide at the annual fall convention.
As EC4WDA expanded, so did its scope. Initially focused on regulating competitive events, the association soon embraced a broader mission, including recreational trail riding, land conservation, and public education. EC4WDA became a key advocate for preventing public land closures, engaging in search and rescue operations, and fostering community involvement through service projects. |

EC4WDA continues to embody the spirit of its founders. Its membership spans approximately 11 states and has been reorganized into three regions for greater efficiency:

The association's legacy lives on in its annual convention, held every November at the Comfort Inn and Suites in DuBois, Pennsylvania. This gathering serves as a time for members to reconnect, discuss advancements in the sport, and celebrate the community they've built.
